Apprenticeship advice

An apprenticeship is a qualification that provides on the job training. Hiring apprentices helps businesses to grow their own talent by developing a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce.

Funding may be available to help you take on an apprentice.

Funding towards training costs

Funding is available towards the training costs of an apprenticeship. It is paid direct to the employer.

The amount of funding varies depending on your sector and the age of the apprentice at the start of the training:

  • if the apprentice is aged 16 to 18, you could receive up to 100% funding for the apprenticeship framework
  • if they are aged 19 to 24, you will receive up to 50% of the cost of training
  • if they are aged 25 or older, you may receive a contribution of up to 40%

Apprenticeship levy

If you're an employer with a pay bill over £3 million each year, you must pay the apprenticeship levy. You report and pay your levy to HMRC through the PAYE process.


Apprentices are entitled to the national minimum wage and receive paid holiday.
