Children's Summer Reading Challenge

Reading throughout the summer is very important for children's development – and it's fun!

Summer Reading Challenge 2022

The Summer Reading Challenge for 2022 will be 'Gadgeteers'. Science is all around you, and whether you're a brilliant baker, a mega music fan, or a tech wizard – in fact whatever it is you love – there'll be something for you in this year's challenge.

Full details will be published nearer the summer.

Summer Reading Challenge 2021

The Summer Reading Challenge for 2021 was the environment-themed 'Wild World Heroes'. Children could join in either online or at their local library. In total, 1,968 took part and 1,057 successfully completed the challenge by reading 6 books or more.

We have sent certificates to schools for all those who completed the challenge.

Summer Reading Challenge school shield

Our Summer Reading Challenge school shield is awarded to the school that has the most students finishing the challenge in comparison to the number of students who took part.

Congratulations to Woodside Academy – winners of the shield for 2021 and 2019! Well done to Kenningtons Primary Academy and Dilkes Academy for coming second and third in 2021.

For a chance to have your school's name engraved on the shield, ask your friends to take part and complete the annual Summer Reading Challenge. Every school in Thurrock, whether big or small, has an equal chance to have its name put on the shield and keep it for the year.
